Motorcycle Rental in Bali 2026: Prices, License Rules & What to Expect

Renting a motorcycle in Bali is easy — doing it properly takes ten minutes of homework. The island runs on two wheels, and in 2026 the rental scene splits cleanly in two: cheap automatic scooters everywhere, and a small number of shops renting real geared motorcycles. This guide covers what motorcycle rental in Bali actually costs this year, the licence rules that police really enforce, how deposits and insurance work, and what to check before you ride away.

What motorcycle rental costs in Bali in 2026

Prices depend on one decision first: scooter or real motorcycle. Scooters are the cheapest way around the island. Real motorcycles — trail bikes, naked twins, big bikes — cost more because they are genuinely different machines, and the monthly rate is where the value is: commit to a month and the per-day price drops by half or more.

Here are real 2026 numbers. The scooter row is the typical market range across Canggu and Seminyak; the motorcycle rows are our own published rates, confirmed for 2026 (rough USD guide at IDR 16,300 to the dollar).

Two things to notice. First, a real trail bike costs about the same per month as a mid-range scooter — the “motorcycles are expensive” idea mostly comes from daily rates. Second, any shop that won’t publish a price is telling you something. Every rate above is public, and the longer you book, the cheaper each day gets.

Scooter or motorcycle — the honest version

If you’re staying within a few kilometres of your villa for a week or two, a scooter does the job. If you’re here for a month or more, or you actually enjoy riding, a real motorcycle changes the trip: long-travel suspension for Bali’s potholes and unpaved tracks, power in reserve for safe overtakes, and access to volcano trails and black-sand beaches a scooter simply can’t reach.

Licence rules: the IDP is not optional

Indonesian law requires every foreign rider to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) endorsed for motorcycles, together with their home-country driving licence. Police in Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud and Kuta run regular licence checks, and “the rental shop said it’s fine” is not a defence — riding without an IDP means an on-the-spot fine and, far worse, a travel insurer that can refuse to pay if you crash.

Get the IDP in your home country before you fly — it takes about 15 minutes at a motoring organisation (AAA, Post Office, NRMA, ADAC depending on where you live) and costs less than a dinner out. The old “tourist licence” from the Denpasar police station was discontinued in 2025; the IDP is now the only legal route. Make sure it’s the 1949-convention permit with a motorcycle stamp — a car-only licence doesn’t cover you on two wheels.

Deposits, passports and red flags

A fair Bali rental works like this: a published price, a refundable cash deposit, and your passport stays with you. Some shops still ask to hold your passport as collateral — never agree to it. Your passport is your only identity document in Indonesia, and handing it over gives the shop leverage you don’t want them to have if anything goes wrong. A legitimate business does not need it.

• ·Published rates — walk away from “message us for price” or prices that change after you arrive.
• ·Refundable cash deposit — normal and fine; get the amount in writing (a WhatsApp message counts).
• ·Passport stays with you — a photo or copy is all a shop should ever ask for.
• ·Written condition check — photograph the bike from all sides at pickup, existing scratches included.

Insurance: what nobody tells you upfront

Here’s the part most rental listings leave out: Bali rental shops — us included — do not insure the bike. If it’s damaged or stolen, you’re responsible, which is why the deposit exists. And your medical cover is your own job: you need travel insurance that specifically includes motorcycle riding, and almost every policy only pays out if you were riding legally — valid home licence plus motorcycle-endorsed IDP. No IDP means no payout, and a medical evacuation from Bali can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Sort the insurance and the IDP before you fly and the whole risk picture changes.

Delivery, pickup and where you can ride

Most Canggu-area rentals deliver. What to check before you ride away

• ·Brakes front and rear — squeeze both before you roll, not at the first intersection.
• ·Tyres — tread on both, no cracks or bulges; Bali’s wet season eats worn tyres.
• ·Lights, indicators and horn — you’ll use the horn more than you expect.
• ·Existing damage — photograph everything and send it to the shop on WhatsApp so there’s no argument later.
• ·Helmet fit — a proper full-face should be snug; ask for a different size if it’s not.
• ·Fuel — confirm the fuel policy; most bikes go out with some petrol and come back the same.
• ·The shop’s WhatsApp number saved — if anything happens on the road, that’s your lifeline.
